"The Annunciation" M. Peter Tremonte, O.P.
Advent / Christmas / Epiphany
The seasons of ADVENT, CHRISTMAS and EPIPHANY are all celebrations of one major event: The coming of God into human history.
Advent, from adventus (Latin), means "coming" or "arrival." Christmas, from Cristes Maesse (Old English), means the Eucharistic celebration of the enfleshment of God in Jesus. Epiphany, from epiphaneia (Greek), means "appearance" or "manifestation." |
Advent summons the believer to a personal journey through the darkest days of the year into the light of Christ's coming into the world. In this special year it invites the believer to be aware of his/her connection with all peoples of all times since the beginning of creation.
The liturgical readings reflect the longing of the prophets, the promise proclaimed by John the Baptizer, and the prayerful waiting of Mary. They express the yearning of humankind for the one who shows us the way through the seeming dead of winter to the ultimate victory of Christ - the Resurrection at Easter.

Advent Prayer:
God of our longing, you have given us a vision of your reign on this earth where the poor have enough for life, the humble are raised up, captives are freed and and a year of favor is proclaimed. Help us to be faithful to your vision by living and proclaiming your word of justice and peace.
"O come, O Wisdom from on high, Who orders all things mightily, To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her way to go." |

Soul-Life
My soul-life is like Mary's child-bearing. I too had an Annunciation ... when God awaited my acceptance Of a life of grace. With my "fiat," The Incarnation Of the Son of God began within me. My life became an Advent Of oneness With my God! It is but a prelude to The Nativity of heaven Where I shall see My soul-born Face to face!
