Fast and Pray for Peace

and
Prayer Vigil in St. Dominic Villa Chapel
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
On every Tuesday from Pentecost Sunday to June 30, Houston Dominicans will fast and pray for peace as part of a national effort. Thirty or more sisters and friends stand on the corner of the Motherhouse grounds from 5:30 to 6:30 to give public witness to peace. They gather at 7:00 p.m. in their Villa chapel for a hour-long Prayer Vigil.
The call to fasting and prayer is being initiated by The Iraq Coordinating Committee, a collaborative effort of the North American Promoters of Justice, Peace and Care of Creation and the Dominican Leadership Conference, the networking organization of Dominican leaders across the US. In anticipation of the June 30th transition of power in Iraq, Dominican congregations, provinces, chapters and monasteries are urged to fast and pray for peace over the 30 days from Pentecost Sunday to June 30th.
Prayers for peace will begin on Pentecost Sunday (May 30) and the fast will begin Memorial Day (May 31). Originally launched in fall of 2002, the Dominican Fast for Peace and the “I Have Family in Iraq” button campaign served as a unifying voice for Dominicans to express their concern for the security and safety of the Iraqi people in light of the US led war against Saddam Hussein. A renewed effort of fasting and prayer is being called for. The Dominican Leadership Conference website offers details about the fast, when congregations and provinces are participating and what every Dominican can do to participate. The site also includes a prayer for peace in Iraq, preaching and study material, and the Dominican Order’s statement to the United Nations Human Rights Commission on Iraq.
