A group of eight women faithfully visit St. Dominic Villa, the Dominican retirement facility, every Thursday to wash and set the sisters' hair.
They call themselves "The Mane Train." Once a week, every sister gets a pick-me-up, looking refreshed and lovely. Invariable the hairdressers bring in a little party of snacks and drinks for their "clients." The women claim that they are the ones who benefit most by their visit with the sisters.
The community offers the Pauline Gannon award this year, a bronze bas-relief of St. Catherine of Siena, to these generous and steadfast friends. The community joined in saluting these honorees on Dec. 18, 2004, at the Advent Liturgy and Brunch.

Recipient of the 2003 Pauline Gannon Award Mary Ann Araiza
The Community Advent Liturgy, December 14, 2003, was the occasion for the presentation of the Pauline Gannon Award to Mary Ann Araiza (left), in recognition of her outstanding service to the community and its mission. Prioress Sr. Heloise Cruzat in presenting the "Angel" bas-relief said:
|
"...to Mary Ann Araiza in recognition of her faith, her fidelity, and generosity in service. Mary Ann began her employment with the congregation as Administrative Secretary in June of 1986. That means that she has served with extraordinary care throughout three administrative periods, adapted to three Prioresses and Councils, and kept her kindness, cheerfulness and her sanity---that alone deserves a high award! Mary Ann brings the light of her smile and friendship to our spaces---we are profoundly and forever grateful.

Recipients of the 2001 Pauline Gannon Award
George and Kay Martin
The award was presented at the Community Advent Liturgy on December 16. Most of George and Kay's children and their families joined in the recognition of their parents as outstanding examples in their service to others. In her presentation, Sr. Marygrace Peters said:
| " We treasure our association with George and Kay and their family deeply. Our sisters have known and worked with them through the years at St. Peters School, St. Agnes Academy, and the University of Houston Newman Community where they've had such a significant presence. Over and over we have heard it said that they are so faithful and kind - whether it showed in their valiant stand against racism in the 60's or in their tireless outreach projects and involvement with the Dominican Family in Houston and in South Texas. Who of us in the Houston convents will ever forget the crates of oranges at Christmas along with perfectly made pecan pralines carefully prepared in the Martin's kitchen? ... Their support has been constant and we are so grateful for such faithful and loyal friends who share our Dominican family mission." |
Recipients of the 2000 Pauline Gannon Award Alfred and Dolores Goerlich
Sister Heloise presents the award to Alfred and Dolores with Dolores' sister, Sister Florence Bielamowicz, OP, attending.
On Sunday, December 17, 2000, the Pauline Gannon Award was inaugurated. In presenting the award to the honorees Dolores and Alfred Goerlich, Sister Heloise Cruzat, Prioress, said:
|
"I cannot name the length of years, and I cannot name all the acts of generosity, service and friendship that are regularly extended to our community by Dolores and Alfred. They are outstanding in their support of the annual art and craft sale. They regularly provide beautiful floral decor for the chapel; they participate in our special events. They are faithful and loyal friends, and we are most appreciative!" | |
