Guatemala Mission
1966 - present

 A short history...

The Houston Dominican Sisters responded to an appeal of Pope John XXIII and began our ministry in Guatemala in l966.

Initially we staffed an elementary school in Zacapa in eastern Guatemala and taught catechism to children and adults in that area. After four years, the local residents were prepared to assume responsibility for the school and the catechetical instruction.

In l970, we moved to Guatemala City, where we continued our work in a variety of ministries, including helping people to cope with the devastating earthquake on l976, and the tragedies caused by the political and social unrest of the times.

  At present...

San Vicente de Paul School, under the leadership of Miriam Oliveros, O.P. as Principal (pictured at the top of the page with a student and parent), offers individualized instruction to more than 600 children from 2 to 15 years of age. The program includes special emphasis on Christian values of love, justice and peace as preparation of the children for responsible leadership in a Guatemala society of the future.

The school employs 30 trained teachers. In the evenings, these teachers meet with the parents to promote better understanding of the formation of their children. Eighty-five percent of the graduates go on to higher education.

Theresa Macey, O.P. conducts Christian leadership programs for university students in Guatemala City, adult bible studies,
and offers spiritual direction.

Through the efforts of Theresa, funds are raised to support the mission activities and projects. The diocese of Galveston-Houston also contributes to the living expenses of our sisters there.

Theresa is pictured to the right with some of the children at San Vicente de Paul School.
