Justice, Peace and Care of Creation Ministry

Framework:

Care of creation is the framework upon which we build as Dominican Justice Promoters.

As Dominicans we:

-- study the interrelatedness of all;

-- challenge systems that dominate and oppress our world;

-- encourage a life style that fosters equality and mutuality;

-- preach truth that liberates all;

-- pray to sustain hope;

-- enhance life for Earth community.

Prayer for Peace

Ramiah (9 mos.) and Hamza

May we be filled with the strength
to seek peace.
War will not end when the guns are silent.
Violence can never lead to peace.
May we be filled with the courage
to seek peace.
We grieve for the harm to our own country,
The degradation suffered here and in Iraq,
The contagion of fear and distrust,
The restriction of freedoms,
The quashing of dialogue and dissent.
We grieve the terrible wounding
of those sent off to fight in a war
that is questioned all over the world.
We grieve the rupture of families here and in Iraq.
May we be filled with the compassion
to seek peace.
We are members of one human family.
We grasp the horror of war in all its forms.
And we struggle to embrace the suffering of all
with love and compassion.
May we be filled with the endurance
to seek peace.
Recognizing our weakness
We call on the God of mercy and compassion
to guide us in the days ahead.
May we be filled with the vision
of peace.

Hospital in Honderus

About Dr. Castillo:

Since 1999, Luther Castillo has directed the Luaga Hatuadi Waduhenu Foundation "For the Health of our People" in Garifuna's language, bringing essential health services to isolated indigenous coastal communities. After his 2005 graduation from the Latin American Medical School in Havana, Dr. Castillo returned to the Honduran coast to lead the construction of the first Garfuna Rural Hospital which has provided health services to at least 20,000 people in the surrounding communities.

The hospital opened in December 2007, a few months after Dr. Castillo was named "Honduran Doctor of the Year" by Rotary Internationals Tegucigalpa chapter. "Thank you for inspiring me," said California Lieutenant Govenor John Garamendi, speaking at the hospital's opening ceremony.

The hospital and its outreach health program are being supported by international organizations, including the Sacramento, California Central Labor Council, Global Links, The Birthing Project, and MEDICC. Several U.S. medical schools also have cooperative arrangements with the Garifuna hospital, including Johns Hopkins, Emory Charles Drew and University of California.

Just weeks before the coup, Dr. Castillo was named director of International Cooperation in the Honduras Foreign Ministry.

Dr. Castillo is featured in a documentary film that received the Council on Foundations Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film and Digital Media (USA) visit http://saludthefilm.net/ns/index.html.
