On Thursday, June 28, 2001, at the Dominicans Institute for the Arts Conference
in Elkins Park, PA, the Fra Angelico Award for excellence in the arts was awarded
posthumously to Kathleen Harkins, OP of Adrian and Mary Peter Tremonte, OP of Houston.
The awards were accepted by representatives of their congregations.

Kathleen Harkins, OP was a woman nationally known for her
one-woman shows of Catherine of Siena, Julian of Norwich,
Trudy the Bag Lady, and many more. Her preaching
of the word of God through story was a joy. A former vice chairperson
of the board of DIA, Kathleen felt the DIA was part of her legacy.

Mary Peter Tremonte, OP was a sculptor and liturgical designer
whose work is found in over 60 churches throughout the country.
Founder of the Dominican Institute of the Fine Arts in Florence, Mary Peter
included in her works over 22 life size or larger than life size sculptures,
stained glass, 12 large bas reliefs in bronze or marble,
and other works too numerous to mention.

Jo Ann worked with Mary Peter for over twenty years in
the art ministry. Giving her congratulations
is Ann Willits, OP (Sinsinawa, WI), member of the
Board of the Dominican Institute for the Arts.
