When I was young and growing up, my Grandmother lived close by. She was very fond of my sister, brother and me. At Christmas time she splurged on presents. My last one was when I was about ten or twelve was a beautiful china tea set. The pattern were little pink roses edging the top of the cups, and around the other dishes. It had a set of eight dishes and cups- saucers, dinner plates, salad plates and a covered bowl with a lid. Patterned like everything big dishes would have.
I then grew up and joined the Dominican Sisters and began training. I was given the privilege of preparing Sr. Mary John's meal trays. Sr. Mary John had T.B. and had been in bed for many years. I wanted to do my best to make her hungry and enjoy her meals, which I brought three times a day! So when I told my mother she said, "Hunny, I still have your tea set and the dishes and they are the right size for a tray?" I was thrilled at the suggestion. My mother also made a tray, painted in white with beautiful pink roses to match the dishes. It was a success! Sr. Mary John looked forward to see what was on the tray and how it was arranged. I was having a "ball" though Sr. Mary John didn't eat much but she ate well.
Later I was sent out to begin my teaching career in California, but the dishes were used for many years for anyone who became ill.
