ST.  DOMINIC VILLA

Praying daily for the sisters in active ministries, friends, Dominican "family", Partners in Mission is the focus of their ministry for the retired sisters of St. Dominic Villa. Constructed in 1967 on the site of the old Motherhouse, the Villa is a hub of activity, peace and gentle care.

Volunteers offer help daily with important and specialized services, acting as receptionist at the front desk, gardening, driving sisters to medical appointments, helping the sisters prepare for the Annual Villa Arts and Craft Sale every year in November.

The building is located close to the Dominican Sisters Community Garden, an affiliate of Urban Harvest, and the beautiful outdoor Labyrinth that is open for walking in meditative prayer. The Villa Dining Room is decorated seasonally, lunch is the main meal, a steam table offers good basic dishes. Volunteers, special guests, students from St. Pius X and St. Agnes, staff and sisters drop in to share a meal and conversation.

Seeing to the quality of life of the Villa are the Administrator, Dolores Goerlich, Pastoral Coordinator Annette Dworsky, the nursing staff led by Doris Yordanoff, RN and the Dietary Staff led by Ruby Wilson, Food Service Manager.  Dottie Ross is Volunteer Director of Volunteers.

Student Interviews

In the fall of 2006 St. Agnes Video students under the direction of their teacher, conducted interviews with some of the sisters living at the Villa. The focus was the story of the sister's life: why she chose the Dominican Sisters of Houston, was becoming a sister a difficult choice, where she had taught and what, funny stories from her experience, what her life was like now. The students were lively and interested and the sisters animated in telling their stories, each unique. It was a wonderful experience for both students and sisters, the students generous with their interest, time, honing their questions carefully and the sisters generous with sharing their experiences of up to 75 years of serving as a Dominican sister. Thanks to: Patricia Gras, KUHT & Terry Supreen, Art/ Video Teacher
